Let's Duet: Get Ready For the Contest Finale!

Everyone knows that the only thing better than a karaoke contest is a duet karaoke contest. Not only do you get a chance to take the stage with someone you know, you both get the opportunity to channel artists you love. Sonny and Cher. Johnny and June. Kanye and Rihanna. Whatever duo you want to emulate onstage, a duet karaoke contest proves a perfect forum to showcase your talents, edge out the competition and, most importantly, have fun, while sharing the stage with a fellow singer!

Command the Stage With Your Next Duet

Karaoke offers an opportunity for all of us to play rock star, no matter what our individual talent levels (or lack thereof). It's easy to take the stage as a solo artist and do whatever comes naturally. However, performing as a duet proves to be slightly more nuanced. You and your vocal counterpart should get in sync before your act. Knowing a few simple duet tips can ensure you deliver a performance worthy of a mic drop.

Tip 1: Choose the Right Partner
Think about some of the most famous duets. Timeless songs like Up Where We Belong by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes, Stop Dragging My Heart Around by Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty and The Way I Are, by Timbaland and Keri Hilson all have one thing in common: the singers' voices and styles complement each other. When choosing your partner, look for someone who has a sound that will blend well with yours onstage.

Tip 2: Pick a Manageable Song

Yes, we all think we sound great while singing alone in the car. However, it's important to remember that most of us do not sound like Beyonce or John Mayer. Choosing your song is as critical as choosing your partner. Select a song that effectively showcases both of your skills, all while staying in your collective range so you can hit every note effortlessly.

    Tip 3: Pay Attention

It's easy to get caught up in the excitement once you take the stage. However, you should make a conscious effort to stay focused during the parts of the song where you’re not singing. Feel free to dance and get the crowd going while your partner tears it up...all while keeping an ear on where you are in the song so you know exactly when to pick up where your partner left off.

    Tip 4: Prompt your Partner

Perhaps it's your partner who is having a tough time staying on task during your act. Not a problem. Rather than drawing attention to the attention lapse, use a prompting signal that looks like it's all part of the performance. A pointed glance, a quick nod or even a dramatic jazz hand can prove all that's needed to get your counterpart back on track.
