Talk Like a Pirate Day
Arrgh mateys. Nope that’s not a typo, we’re just getting into the spirit of International Talk Like A Pirate Day, coming up on September 19. At Isle of Capri® Hotel Lake Charles, we think pirates are pretty cool. They travel the world, get to wear interesting clothes and have pretty awesome accents. It’s no wonder they have their own special day named after them.
You may be surprised to know, International Talk Like A Pirate Day hasn’t been around that long. The idea came to be from John Baur and Mark Summers, on June 6, 1995. They were playing racquetball, when all of a sudden, they had this burning desire to begin talking like pirates. One thing lead to another, and the next thing they knew they had created a full-on holiday. Of course, June 6 is a very special holiday on its own. It’s the anniversary of D-Day in World War II. So the guys instantly knew they needed to choose another day. Mark decided his ex-wife’s birthday, September 19, was much more appropriate. The two men celebrated on their own for many years. They caught a lucky break when they joined forces with, nationally syndicated columnist, Dave Barry. He loved the idea! Dave wrote a column on the two men and the rest, as they say, is history!
There are many ways to talk like a pirate. You can speak in Dutch or German. But for the sake of simplicity, we’ll be explaining this in English. While pirate speak can be quite rich and complicated, this is your must have pirate lingo if you want to appear as authentic as possible. Here we go.
- Ahoy: Hello.
- Avast: Stop and give attention. Also used to indicate surprise.
- Aye: Yes, in agreement.
- Aye Aye: I’ll get around to that.
- Arrr: (Not to be confused with arrgh) Yes, I agree, I love it, I’m happy. It’s pretty universal.
As a pirate, you can celebrate any way you choose. However, we really recommend going all out. Get in costume, learn the official pirate theme song, and throw your own pirate themed party. If party planning is too much, you could always stop by one of the many pirate festivals taking place across the country. Visit www.talklikeapirate.com for links to festival information and party ideas. And if you want to truly sweeten the deal, there’s a well-known chain getting in on the pirate action.
- Krispy Kreme Doughnuts®: (Note this is at participating locations only) Come in and talk like a pirate, and you’ll receive one free original glazed donut. If you take it a step further and show up in a full pirate costume, you’ll receive a dozen free glazed doughnuts.
If you’re feeling a little adventurous, stop by our ship and win some booty of your own! See ya soon mateys!
